Description
A Pig Signaler is a tool used in the oil and gas industry. Its main function is to detect the position of the pig. When the pig passes through the position where it is, different Pig Signalers, will react in different ways. For example, a manual flag reset Removable Pig Signaler reflects the passage of a pig by changing the direction of the flag. The pig signaler combined with an electronic signal expresses the passage of the pig transmitting an electronic signal. Date and time display pig signal express the passage of the cleaning pig on its screen.
They are usually installed on the pipe where the pig is expected to pass. For example, they are usually installed at the receiving end of the pipe and the valve station. The information provided by it is important for pipeline operators to monitor the condition of the pipeline. Through the passage situation of the cleaning pig, operators can detect problems such as corrosion, cracking, or other damages that may require maintenance or repair. Regular inspection and maintenance of pipelines of using pig and this product are needed. Because they can help ensure the safe and efficient transportation of oil, gas, or some other mediums.

Parts of a Pig Signaler:
A Removable Pig Signaler consists of the following parts:
- A trigger: The trigger penetrates the wall of a pipe. It moves when touched by a passing cleaning pig. Then it will drive the flag to rotate 90° from the horizontal state to the upright state.
- A mechanism: The mechanism transmits the motion of a trigger in a pipe to a sign or external circuit.
- A visible sign or electrical indicator: It is mounted on the outside of a pipe. A pressure vessel that allows for the installation of a triggering mechanism and also serves as an isolation device.
Advantages:
- First, it is a Removable Pig Signaler. It can be removed by using a special retriever.
- Second, it is a Pig Signaler with a uni-directional trigger. Compared with the bi-directional trigger, the uni-directional trigger can be driven more easily. Because the uni-directional trigger is driven by a magnet. The drive of the uni-directional trigger does not affect by the pressure in the pipes. In other words, under the same pressure, the uni-directional trigger is more likely to be driven than the bi-directional trigger.
- Third, the insert depth of the pig signal can be adjusted by 20mm. When there is a distance needed to be adjusted after the welded, operator can adjust the pig signaler. The adjustable distance of the Pig Signaler can make the insert distance into the pipe more precise.
- Forth, the connection type of this pig signaler is welded connection. Unlike the pig signaler connected with a flange, which requires a flange interface on the pipe, welded Pig Signaler can be welded anywhere in the pipe. It’s convenient for installation. But the material of the welded base must match the material of the pipe so that it can be welded to the pipe.
Working Principle:
At the bottom of it is a trigger. It is inserted inside the pipe near the wall. When the pig passes, the trigger is driven and the magnetic power pulls the flag. Then the flag shaft rotates 90° under the action of magnetic, from the horizontal state to the upright state. People can then determine the location of the cleaning pig by the location of the flag. The flag can be reset by flipping it counterclockwise.
How does it work?
There are two types of Pig Signalers. The first type is the Intrusive Pig Signaler. The second type is a non-intrusive Pig Signaler. The intrusive Pig Signaler is installed to the pipe via a specialized fitting. The position where it is installed is fixed which can not be changed. It can be installed through a flange or a welding way. A trigger that protrudes into the pipe is mechanically activated when the pig passes. A non-intrusive detector, on the other hand, does not need to be permanently mounted. It usually senses the pig via magnetic detection.
Operation Cautions:
Before installing it, there is something need to pay attention to. Operators determine the position of a cleaning pig through the horizontal or vertical direction of the flag. The flag should be manually reset to the non-driven state before use. The flag should be pressed down by the operator so that it is in a horizontal position. If the trigger is pushed by the pig, the flag will swing more than 45 degrees, which indicates the pig has passed. Then the flag changes from a horizontal orientation to a vertical orientation. This indicates that a pig has passed through the point at the pipe.
Welded connection process:
- Only weld the base. Any other parts should not be on the base.
- When welding, the base is pressed to prevent movement or deflection. At first, four points should be welded symmetrically. Then symmetrically and continuous welding should be done to prevent base deformation during welding.
- After cooling, operators should observe whether there is a deformation or not. Then the sealing surface should be coated with sealing grease, which is ready to install this product.
