Pig Signaler
A Pig Signaler is an instrument that is used in the oil and gas industry. Its function is to detect the passage of cleaning pigs. When pigs pass through the position where it is, the Pig Signaler will give a response to people to show the passage of cleaning pigs. Different pig signalers have different ways to show the passage of cleaning pigs. For example, Pig Signaler with flags show the passage through the direction of the flag. They combined with electrical signals show the passage through the signal. Date and time display Pig Signaler show the passage on the screen.
Introduction:
The Pig Signaler in this picture is intrusive. It is attached to the pipe by a flange. The depth of its insertion into the pipe can be adjusted by 20mm. The type of Pig Signaler in this picture is a manual reset flag combined with electrical signals. The trigger type of this one is Bi-directional. We can also provide a Uni-directional trigger. This can be customized according to customer needs.
An intrusive Pig Signaler is installed inside the pipe to physically interact with the pig as it passes through the pipe. Intrusive Pig Signaler can be mechanical switches, magnets, or signals that transmit the signal when the Pig Signaler contact with the pig. Intrusive Pig Signalers may require a special fitting to be installed in the pipeline to allow their insertion and removal.
Advantages:
- First, it is combined with an electrical signal. Therefore, there is no need to check the instrument closely to see whether the Pig Signaler passes or not. It is available to receive the signal far away from the Pig Signaler. It is convenient for people to get information on cleaning pigs’ passages by using a Pig Signaler combined with electrical signals.
- Second, the insert depth of the Pig Signaler can be adjusted by 20mm. The adjustable distance of the Pig Signaler can make the insert distance into the pipe more precise.
- Third, the connection type of it is a flange connection. Unlike the welded pig signaler, the material of welded base must match the pipe material to be connected. The flange connection does not need to be made of the same material as the flange on the pipe. It just has to make it the same size to attach it to the pipe.
- Fourth, it is a bi-directional pig signaler. When the pig passes in the pipeline no matter from the launch direction or back direction, the passage of the pig can be normally transferred through the pig signaler.

Functions:
They are usually installed on the pipe to check whether the pig passes or not. It is usually installed at the beginning or the end of the pipe. The signaler detects a pig’s passage and sends a signal to the control room, indicating that the pig has passed. At the same time, it provides information about the location of the cleaning pig. The information provided by it is important for pipeline operators to monitor the condition of the pipeline. Through the passage situation of the cleaning pig, operators can detect problems such as corrosion, cracking, or other damage that may require maintenance or repair. Regular inspection and maintenance of pipelines using pig and these products are needed. Because it can help ensure the safe and efficient transportation of oil and gas.
Working Principle:
At the bottom of it is a trigger that can be triggered in both directions. It is inserted inside the pipe near the wall. As the pig passes, the firing pin is flicked and the connecting rod in the sealing bush is pulled. Then the flag shaft rotates 90° under the action of the torsion spring, from the horizontal state to the upright state. People can then determine the location of the pig by the location of the flag. The flag can be reset by flipping it counterclockwise.
Operation Cautions:
Operators determine the passage of a cleaning pig through the horizontal or vertical direction of the flag. What is needed to pay attention to is that the flag should be manually reset to the non-trigger state before use. The flag should be pressed down by the operator so that it is in a horizontal position. If the trigger is pushed by the pig, the flag swings greater than 45 degrees. Then the flag changes from a horizontal position to a vertical orientation. This indicates that a pig has passed through the pipe at this location.
Intrusive or Non-intrusive Pig Signaler?
The choice of both two pig signals depends on a variety of factors, including the type of pig used, the size and material of the pipe, and the operating conditions. Non-invasive pig types are generally easier to install and maintain, but may not be as accurate or reliable as invasive pig types. Intrusive pigs, on the other hand, can provide more accurate and reliable detection. But they require more complex installation procedures.
An intrusive one is an instrument inserted into a pipe. While a non-intrusive pig signaler is an instrument used outside the pipe. In most cases, intrusive pigs are mechanically attached to the pipes. However, this requires a flange connection or an opening on the pipe. Sometimes, when the condition of a flange connection is not met, or the opening is inaccessible, a non-intrusive pig signaler is used. Non-intrusive one can be set anywhere in the pipes. The installation is easier than intrusive pig signalers.
